Cabinet Painting Process

Our process is a bit different than other painting companies. That is why we are the most efficient and produce the highest quality of work. When painting your kitchen cabinets we will apply the highest quality paint to bring new life to your home. Our process takes between 2-3 weeks but don’t worry, we are only at your home on average 3 days total. Our cabinet crew has been through an extensive amount of training to specialize in the cabinet painting process. As this is one of our most popular projects, we are typically scheduling 2-3 months in advance so don’t delay, get on our schedule today!

  • STEP 1 – PREPARATION

We ask that before your project begins, you clear off your countertops. You do not need to empty your cabinets unless of course you want the insides of your cabinets painted, which is standard if you have glass cabinet doors. When we arrive we will prepare your project by strategically placing drop clothes and plastic to protect your floors, appliances, countertops, and surrounding furniture.

  • STEP 2 – HARDWARE REMOVAL

We proceed by removing all hardware from the cabinet doors and drawers. This will allow for us to bring the doors and drawer fronts back to our professional spray booth. Sometimes drawer fronts cannot be removed, however, don’t worry, we are still able to complete the project by removing the whole drawer.

  • STEP 3 – PAINTING AT YOUR HOME

We will LIGHTLY sand the bases and wipe down the cabinets with a premium deglosser, which not only cleans the cabinets, it allows for the primer and paint to adhere better. Don’t worry, this light sanding will not create much dust, it is only used to even out the surfaces and more importantly it opens the grain of the wood to allow for superior adhesion. Upon completion of the sanding we will prime all the cabinet bases with two (2) coats using a shellac based primer. We will return on the second day to brush and roll the cabinet bases with at least two (2) coats of finish paint. Keep in mind we will be returning to finish the project, there may be touch ups.

  • STEP 4 – PROFESSIONAL SPRAY BOOTH

While your doors and drawer fronts are at our shop we will repeat all the same steps as the bases. This time we will professionally spray the primer and paint in our fully licensed, professional spray booth (the ONLY one of its kind in the area). The spray finish will highlight the natural beauty of the wood. When painting the cabinets we can not guarantee the wood grain will not be shown. We are at the mercy of the wood. We do however, guarantee total paint coverage on all cabinets.

  • STEP 5 – THE CURING PROCESS

Now that everything has been painted, we just wait. When your cabinets are in the curing process, please be careful when maneuvering in your kitchen. Sacrifice the next month for years of happiness! This process can take between 30 and 45 days upon completion.

  • STEP 6 – FINAL DAY

Now the final day has come for your project to be completed. When we arrive we will start by hanging all the doors and drawer fronts. If you are updating your hardware (knobs, handles, hinges) we will do so at this time. We will do any and all touch ups that are needed. Now would be the time if you see any touch up’s, please point them out to our crew. We are there to complete YOUR project, happiness is key! Please remember that the cabinets do take 30-45 days to cure. We provide a 1 year warranty against paint failure. Chesapeake Painting Services will repair any portion of the project described in your estimate that fails due to workmanship.
