Kitchen Cabinets: Should You Replace or Reface?

Amanda was looking for an updated look for her kitchen without spending an arm and a leg on new cabinets. She loves her home but doesn’t want to keep sinking money into kitchen renovations fearing she might not return her investment.

We explained we can work magic with those older looking cabinets and save her a fortune with our expert cabinet refinishing.

Only the cabinet over the refrigerator was to be replaced with new cabinetry to fit a new refrigerator while the rest would remain the same.  With the relief of not spending upwards of $15K on new cabinets, the homeowner was now trying to decide between a stained finish or a painted finish.  We advised her that a painted finish and some new hardware would brighten up the kitchen more substantially and provide a fresher look at a lower price than staining, not to mention lower maintenance of them over time.

Our Cabinet Painting Process in a Nutshell

Though known as the top painting contractor in Annapolis, this has emerged as one of our highest demand services because it does so much for the presentation of most owner’s most important and used room, the almighty kitchen! Here is a snapshot of what we do:

  1. We removed the cabinet doors and drawers and drilled the holes to accommodate the new hardware (selected by the homeowner of course).
  2. The doors and drawers were taken to our shop where they were thoroughly prepped and sanded.
  3. We applied two prime coats using a high adhesive primer and then two finish coats of Pittsburgh Paints Breakthrough Waterborne Alkyd Satin finish. Unlike most painters (hacks), we know which paint to use for which project as not all are the same.
  4. Cabinet bases were prepped and painted in the same manner on site.
  5. Once ample time was given for the paint to cure, the doors and drawers were transported back to the homeowner’s house and installed with the new hardware.

“It’s like having a brand new kitchen at a fraction of the cost.” – Homeowner

Now the homeowner has kitchen cabinets that will bring them satisfaction for years to come.

Here are some Before and After Photos to get a better sense of how transformative this process can be to a kitchen.
